If you own a Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4MATIC saloon, then a USD 1,200 or Rs 98,000 (approx) worth of yearly subscription could open up over 80+hp of additional power very soon. This crazy add-on has been listed on the automaker’s US website as an ‘Acceleration Increase’ service package. It will likely be an Over-the-Air (OTA) update, giving the manufacturer control over unlocking and locking the added performance based on the subscription period.

This is also a sign of things to come as we enter the ‘age of subscription’ with EVs and smart cars. Automakers will increasingly be able to activate or deactivate certain features in order to milk additional money from their customers. However, a recent Cox Automotive study showed that 75 percent of car buyers expect all features of their cars to be part of the total purchase price. The survey was based on 217 responses. Earlier in July 2022, BMW faced backlash after trying to make owners pay for features such as heated seats and camera recording even though the cars came with the required hardware.

Mercedes-Benz’s ‘Acceleration Increase’ add-on has been announced for a number of EQ electric vehicle models including the EQS 450 4MATIC. As per the details shared on the official website, the yearly subscription would increase the luxury saloon’s 265 kW (355 hp) to 330 kW (442 hp). This would also bring the EQS’s 0-100 kmph time to under 5 seconds with that extra oomph.
It is interesting to note that to get a similar boost in performance from an ICE engine, it would require complicated mechanical upgrades and a lot more money. In the EQS, it is only going to be a matter of adjusting the motor characteristic curve, torque and maximum output via an over-the-air command. However, in an ICE vehicle, a performance upgrade would be a one-time investment and not an annually recurring cost.

While the performance add-on has only been listed on Mercedes-Benz’s US website, no announcements have been made regarding the add-on for the Made-in-India EQS 580s.
What are your thoughts on the ‘subscription for features’ model? Would you like to not pay for a feature that you might not use or do you want to have access to all software that runs the hardware you have paid for? Tell us in the comments.
